Guo Ziyi was a general of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang. In the later period of Emperor Xuanzong’s reign, due to his obsession with wine and sex, the Tang Dynasty quickly declined from the prosperous Kaiyuan era. At that time, Yang Guifei, whom Emperor Xuanzong favored, had an adopted son named An Lushan, who was a Hu. With the continuous growth of power, An Lushan developed a rebellious heart. This led to the direct decline of the Tang Dynasty. At that time, as a general of the Tang Dynasty, Guo Ziyi, together with Li Guangbi, defeated An Lushan’s troops in Anxi. In July, Guo Ziyi was appointed as the Minister of War and Prime Minister by Emperor Suzong of Tang.
In 757 AD, Emperor Suzong of Tang believed that he had the ability to recover the lost two capitals, so he appointed Guo Ziyi as the Vice Marshal of the Army and Cavalry to suppress the rebellion. Under the command of Guo Ziyi, Tang soldiers fought bravely and regained lost territory in less than a month. Guo Ziyi was therefore conferred the title of Duke of the State and appointed as a Situ.
In 765 BC, one of Guo Ziyi’s subordinate generals, Pugu Huai’en, launched a rebellion, which led to the invasion of several hundred thousand ethnic minorities such as the Khitans and Tubo into the Tang Dynasty. Guo Ziyi was ordered to gather troops and set off for Jingyang in the face of danger. During the An Lushan Rebellion, Guo Ziyi fought alongside the Khitans and had a close friendship. But unfortunately, he was induced by Pugu Huai’en to invade the Tang Dynasty. Guo Ziyi, in order to prove that he was still alive, went to the Khitan camp alone and persuaded the Khitan people to retreat. Guo Ziyi thus greatly defeated Tubo and lifted the siege of Jingyang.

During the reign of Emperor Dezong, Guo Ziyi was appointed as Shangfu and became a minister of honor for a time. In 781 AD, Guo Ziyi passed away at the age of 85. Upon hearing this news, all the civil and military officials in the Manchu dynasty couldn’t help but shed tears. Guo Ziyi has gone through four dynasties: Xuan, Su, Dai, and De. He held important positions and was able to live peacefully until his death, which is undoubtedly a remarkable skill.
