Bai Juyi was a great realist poet of the Tang Dynasty and one of the three great poets of the Tang Dynasty. His poetry has a wide range of themes, diverse forms, and easy to understand language, earning him the titles of “Poetry Demon” and “Poetry King”. Promoted to Hanlin Bachelor and Left Zanshan Dafu. In 846 AD, Bai Juyi passed away in Luoyang and was buried in Xiangshan.
The Old Book of Tang: Observing the policies of the Yuan Dynasty and the memorials of the Bai Dynasty, it is the most profound and profound tool for governing chaos. A fragment of non disciple rumors and praises, a novel of pan pan pan. In terms of literature, observation, and practice, it is better to live in a state of ease. Rest assured in a place of contentment, place your tools in a place of peace. Youthful graduates are also wise!
This is a tragic incident about Yanzi Tower, where the female lead is known as Guan Panpan. She was a famous courtesan of the Tang Dynasty, as beautiful as an immortal, standing tall and graceful. Later, she married Zhang Min, the governor of Xuzhou City.

Guan Panpan, a famous courtesan of the Tang Dynasty, was the concubine of Zhang Min, the Minister of Works. When Bai Juyi visited Zhang’s mansion, he had a banquet with her and praised her, saying, “Drunken and delicate, the wind flutters like peonies.” After Zhang Min’s death, Guan Panpan lived alone in Yanzi Tower in Xuzhou, unmarried for more than ten years.
Guan Panpan actually comes from a very good family, with a scholarly background. He has read poetry since childhood and has a good voice. His singing is very pleasing to the ear, and his dance is also attractive. Nowadays, it is what everyone calls a queen level character. Helpless about the decline of her family, but after becoming a concubine for Zhang Min, she lived a happy life. Zhang Min was very kind to her and appreciated her talents very much.
Once, during a visit by Bai Juyi, Zhang Yin asked Guan Panpan to perform a song and dance. Bai Juyi was impressed and even wrote a poem for her, “Drunk is unbeatable, the wind is gentle and the magic pill is fragrant.” With Bai Juyi’s praise, Guan Panpan gained great popularity, and everyone knew that she was good at singing and dancing, and loved her deeply.
Little did they know, the good times didn’t last long. Two years later, Zhang Yin passed away due to illness. The separation of his wife and family is only related to Pan Pan’s inability to forget his former lover, his unwavering loyalty to Zhang Min, and his clear adherence to chastity. And with Zhang Min leaving, Guan Panpan seemed to have lost his passion for daily life and retreated to Yanzi Tower with an old servant. There was no singing or dancing, and the whole day was desolate. Ten years had passed in the blink of an eye.
Upon hearing about Guan Panpan’s personal achievements, Bai Juyi felt great pity for her and even wrote four poems to improve her performance. After Zhang Zhongsu returned, he showed her the poems written by Bai Juyi. After reading it, Guan Panpan felt a mixture of sadness and anger. In Bai Juyi’s poem, there is a line that goes, ‘Song and dance have been taught to the point of exhaustion, but once you pass away, you won’t be with us.’.
Isn’t Guan Panpan questioning my love for Zhang Min? She tearfully said to Zhang Zhongsu, ‘I won’t die because I’m afraid of tarnishing Zhang Min’s reputation. He wants a woman to kill him for fear of being criticized by history later on!’ Such sincerity was not understood by Bai Juyi, and it felt like she was unwilling to devote her life to Zhang Min. She felt suffocated and helpless.
After Zhang Zhongsu left, Guan Panpan suffered from depression and fasted, and after more than ten days, her fragrance had faded away. After understanding the causes and consequences, Bai Juyi felt a great deal of guilt, not only for his own shallowness, but also for Guan Panpan’s loyalty and loyalty. In fact, we cannot blame Bai Juyi. In the feudal society era, ideas were still somewhat limited. After going through various connections, Bai Juyi finally ensured that the tombstones of Panpan and Zhang Min were accompanied, which can be considered as a kind of filling.
The Tang and Five Dynasties’ “Gathering of Talents” included a poem by Zhang Zhongsu titled “Yanzi Tower”, but the signature was changed to “Panpan”, and Guan Panpan became a “talented woman” with works. In Zhang Junfang’s “Collection of Beautiful Emotions” in the Northern Song Dynasty, Guan Panpan evolved into a talented woman with nearly 300 poems, and began to regard Bai Juyi’s “Feeling for Zhang Pushe’s Various Prostitutes” as a poem written by Bai Juyi to Panpan.
There is no scene of Panpan dying in this story yet. The “Chronicles of Tang Poetry,” which was a meritorious work of the Southern Song Dynasty, began to change Bai Juyi’s poetry to be written for Panpan, and for the first time, wrote the ending of Panpan as a peerless death. The story of Bai Juyi forcing Guan Panpan to death in later generations is based on this.
