In his thirties, he joined the army and began his legendary 40 year career of fighting on the battlefield.
In the nineteenth year of the Zhenguan reign, Xue Rengui, with his bravery, charged forward in a white robe on the battlefield, unstoppable and causing great chaos among the enemy. The Tang army took advantage of the chaos to launch a fierce attack on the enemy, which resulted in a disastrous defeat. He was highly valued as a wise minister in charge of Tang Taizong’s dream. How could he survive? Don’t deceive people!” Xue Rengui then took off his helmet and showed it to the Turkic people. The Turkic people saw it and retreated from Malibai.

In 683, Xue Rengui passed away at the age of 70 and was posthumously appointed as the Grand General of the Left Guard and the Governor of Youzhou.
