In 632 AD, he led his tribe to relocate the capital to Luoxie (now Lhasa).
Twelve years later, he took down Yangtong, unified the whole Xizang region, and established the Tubo Kingdom. On the other hand, the Tang Dynasty, thousands of miles away, was also a prosperous scene, with the emergence of a situation of “nations coming to court”. Songtsen Gampo had long heard of the great Tang dynasty, and in order to promote the development of his kingdom, he decided to form an alliance with the Tang dynasty. In 634 AD, he sent envoys to Chang’an City to inform Li Shimin of the idea of marriage alliance, but Li Shimin did not agree. The main reason for not agreeing is that the Tuyuhun King acted as an intermediary. After returning to Tubo, the envoy truthfully explained the situation to Songtsen Gampo. So, Songtsen Gampo decided to attack the Tuyuhun tribe on one hand, and raise troops to attack the Tang Dynasty on the other.
In the process of invading the Tang Dynasty, neither side gained any advantage, so Songtsen Gampo sent envoys again to propose a marriage alliance. Considering the war, Li Shimin agreed. The bride is Princess Wencheng, who is not the biological daughter of the emperor, but the daughter of Prince Li Daozong. In 641 AD, Li Shimin asked Li Daozong to lead a team to send off his relatives. When the team arrived at the Heyuan area, Songtsen Gampo was already waiting. After meeting Emperor Daozong, Songtsen Gampo performed the ceremony of a son-in-law. From this, it can be seen that Tubo attached great importance to the Tang Dynasty, and Songtsen Gampo also attached great importance to this princess. At that time, the Tang Dynasty was in its heyday, with a large number of dowries purchased, including gold, silver, jewelry, antiques, and precious medicinal herbs.
After Princess Wencheng entered Tibet, she received extremely high treatment. She was first crowned queen, and then a palace was specially built for her. The princess’s journey was recorded and made into murals. Later, in order to make people worship Princess Wencheng, Songtsen Gampo also had statues built in various temples. Princess Wencheng went to Tibet to make peace not only because of the relationship between the two countries and the people, but most importantly, she planted the seeds of Central Plains culture in Xizang.
Later on, the relationship between the two countries remained good, with mutual learning and assistance. In just 9 years, Songtsen Gampo passed away, and Princess Wencheng, as the queen, was very sad. Although they were close and had no emotional foundation, they fell in love with Songtsen Gampo after getting to know each other and always regarded him as a hero. For a long time, Princess Wencheng never recovered from the pain of losing her husband. The two have no children. If Princess Wencheng chose to return to Datang at this time, there would be no problem, but she did not do so. Instead, she chose to stay in Xizang and make contributions to the development of the two countries. So she has lived in Xizang for 30 years, during which she has been committed to friendly exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.
In the 30th year after Songtsen Gampo’s death, Princess Wencheng also left due to smallpox. In order to mourn her, Tubo held a grand funeral for her, and the Tang Dynasty also sent envoys to pay their respects. After her death, Tibetans still go to some temples to worship her and express their love and respect for her. Over the years, I can still feel Princess Wencheng’s breath when I go to Xizang. Although she has been gone for many years, her spirit has been passed down and has had a profound impact on future generations.
