There are many films and TV dramas featuring Xue Rengui as the protagonist, but most of them have altered many historical truths. What exactly was Xue Rengui’s life like? Xue Rengui was a famous general of the Tang Dynasty, who led troops to win many battles and made numerous military achievements. Xue Rengui spent his whole life dealing with rebellions, and both his fame and ultimate failure were due to the rebellion of the rebels. However, Xue Rengui lived quite a long life, reaching the age of 70, which was already very difficult in ancient times. Let’s take a look at some legendary events in Xue Rengui’s life.
When it comes to the famous general Xue Rengui in the early Tang Dynasty, he is regarded as a god like presence in the hearts of many people, from poverty and hardship at the beginning, to later being granted official titles and honors. His legendary life not only changed his own destiny, but also reversed the war situation at that time, which can be said to have changed the fate of the dynasty, the people, and many soldiers to a certain extent.
The legend of Xue Rengui comes from his opportunities, but it must be said that Xue Rengui is also a lucky person who is good at seizing opportunities. In the late years of Emperor Taizong, the campaign against Liao (Goguryeo) was launched. At that time, the farmer Xue Rengui met with the general Zhang Shigui and began a more than thirty year long career of warfare. If Xue Rengui was only recruited to join the army, then he might just be an ordinary soldier. However, before and after the Battle of Anshicheng in the Liao Dynasty, Xue Rengui’s reputation was established, and to some extent, it even became Xue Rengui’s “home ground”.
Xue Rengui is always exceptionally brave on the battlefield. When the army attacked Andicheng, the Goguryeo army had 250000 troops, relying on mountains and rivers to establish fortifications and occupy a strong geographical position, and the situation was severe. Emperor Taizong prepared to divide his troops into four routes for attack. Xue Rengui, who was just starting out, relied on his bravery and wanted to make remarkable achievements. Each person was dressed in eye-catching white clothes, carrying a halberd and bow and arrow, and charged straight towards the enemy camp. For a moment, the enemy was stunned by his momentum and quickly retreated, and the Tang army took the opportunity to defeat Goguryeo.
Afterwards, Xue Rengui continued to signal to Liaodong, first beheading 50000 in the Battle of Jinshan, and leading more than 2000 people to surrender more than 40 cities in Goguryeo. For a time, Xue Rengui’s reputation spread far and wide. In the second year, Xue Rengui captured Pyongyang and Goguryeo was destroyed. Afterwards, Xue Rengui experienced his only major defeat in his life, which was the Battle of Dafeichuan in Qinghai, and was later demoted to a commoner for his crimes. At this time, Xue Rengui was sixty-one years old. The common people and Xue Rengui were neglected for several years, and then reinstated, returning to the place where his legend began – Liaodong. At that time, there were rebellions in Liaodong, and when Xue Rengui rebelled, he dispersed on his own, which indirectly reflected Xue Rengui’s reputation.
In the first year of Xianheng, the court sent Xue Rengui and others to lead the army to escort the Tuyuhun king back to Qinghai. However, due to their subordinates disobeying orders, they were besieged by the Tubo army in Dafeichuan and almost completely annihilated. Xue Rengui was forced to negotiate peace with Tubo, and the Tuyuhun fell. Xue Rengui was dismissed from his post due to defeat in the war.
Not long after being dismissed, the remaining rebel forces in Goryeo rebelled, and Xue Rengui was re employed. In the first year of Yongchun, the Turks invaded Yunzhou and the court sent Xue Rengui to suppress them. At that time, the Turkic people thought Xue Rengui was dead, and his appearance in the army made them panic. Xue Rengui took the opportunity to cover up and achieved a complete victory. In the second year after the great victory in Yunzhou, Xue Rengui passed away at the age of 70. This is the life of Xue Rengui.
