Li Linfu was a prime minister during the Tang Dynasty and also a minister of the Tang royal family. He served as the prime minister for 19 years during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, Li Longji, making him the longest serving prime minister during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang.
During his 19 year tenure as prime minister, Li Linfu wielded immense power over the court and the public. In order to maintain his position and interests, he eliminated dissidents and harmed loyal and righteous individuals.
Most importantly, during Li Linfu’s tenure, he advocated for the reuse of Hu generals, which, coupled with the incompetence of Emperor Xuanzong Li Longji in his later period, led to the growth of An Lushan and laid the foundation for his subsequent rebellion.
Li Linfu was born in 683 AD. He not only had a gentle personality, but also was skilled at playing with power. The important thing is that he is very good at pleasing Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, so he has won the favor and trust of the emperor.
In 735 AD, Li Linfu was appointed as the Minister of Rites and a third rank official in the same department of the Imperial Secretariat. He also served as the Prime Minister along with Zhang Jiuling and Pei Yaoqing.
In 751 AD, Li Linfu concurrently held the positions of Anxi Daduhu and Chanyu Deputy Daduhu. In the second year, Li Linfu considered that many civil servants had previously served as border generals and ministers. In order to consolidate his position, he wanted to cut off civil servants from serving as border generals and ministers, so he advised Emperor Xuanzong of Tang to reuse Hu generals.
At that time, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang favored Li Linfu, so he agreed to Li Linfu’s advice.
Li Linfu’s proposal did indeed prompt the Tang Dynasty to employ some independent Hu generals, such as Gao Xianzhi and Ge Shuhan. But at the same time, it also made An Lushan bigger, laying hidden dangers for the later An Lushan Rebellion.
An Lushan later launched a rebellion, which indeed stirred up the chaos of the prosperous Tang Dynasty and turned it from prosperity to decline. However, An Lushan, this fierce hero, was very afraid of Li Linfu in the past.
Before rebelling against the Tang Dynasty, An Lushan relied on the favor and trust of Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei, as well as his own army, and acted arrogantly, but he was only afraid of Li Linfu.
Because every time An Lushan spoke to Li Linfu, Li Linfu could always guess what An Lushan was thinking and say it in advance, which made An Lushan feel that “Li Linfu can see through himself, very powerful”.
So whenever An Lushan thinks of this, he is very scared.
In January 753 AD, Li Linfu passed away due to illness. After his death, he was posthumously honored as Grand Commandant and Governor of Yangzhou.
Due to An Lushan’s previous fear of Li Linfu and his fear of him, he hated Li Linfu in his heart and conspired with Yang Guozhong, who had always wanted to replace him, to falsely accuse Li Linfu of plotting rebellion.
At that time, shortly after Yang Guozhong’s death and before he was buried, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang had Li Linfu’s coffin split open, his golden purple court uniform taken off, and his family property confiscated. His official title was stripped off, and he was buried with the rites of a commoner.
