The rise and fall of historical dynasties, as well as the succession of vivid historical figures, have left deep imprints in the long river of history. Next, the History Encyclopedia editor will take you into the story of Pei Min.
Li Bai was a romantic poet during the Tang Dynasty in China,
In fact, Li Bai is not only a poet, but also highly skilled in swordsmanship. Swordsmanship is considered the second best in the Tang Dynasty and a peerless master. In his poem ‘The Journey of the Swordsman’, he left behind the classic quatrain of ‘Kill one person with ten steps, leave no trace for a thousand miles. When the task is done, sweep away your clothes, hide deeply and seek fame.’. So who is the first one?
It is said that Li Bai aspired to become a knight from a young age and once studied under the swordsman Pei Min. So, who is Pei Min?
Pei Min, from the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty. He once defended Beiping Commandery (now located in Lulong, Hebei) and participated in battles against the Khitans, Khitans, and Tubo. According to records, he was appointed as the “Left Jin Wu Grand General”. The poet Li Bai once learned swordsmanship from him. During the reign of Emperor Wenzong of Tang, Wu Daozi’s paintings, Zhang Xu’s cursive script, and Pei Min’s sword dance were referred to as the “Three Wonders”, and the world called them the “Sword Saints”.
Yan Zhenqing and Wang Wei both praised him with poems, and it is said that one year, Wu Daozi, Zhang Xu, and Pei Min gathered at the Tiangong Temple in Luoyang. Pei Min wants to invite Wu Daozi to paint for his deceased parents at the Tiangong Temple and pray for blessings. Wu Daozi said: It’s been a long time since I last painted. If General Pei insists on me painting, I can only ask him to dance a “sword dance” first to inspire my painting ideas.
Pei Min, holding a sword and dancing, saw him “running like a flying horse, pulling left and right, like a silver snake dancing, brave and fierce, pretending to be brave!” Suddenly, he “threw the sword into the clouds, several tens of zhang high, like an electric light shooting down, Min led his hand to hold the sheath, and the sword penetrated through the room. A sword thrown dozens of zhang high can be caught with a hand-held scabbard, making it fall straight into the scabbard. It’s truly a swordsmanship skill. At that time, thousands of onlookers were shocked and amazed. Wu Daozi was also moved by the fierce sword dance momentum, and his painting ideas were agile. With the help of gods, he waved his brush to paint the wall, and the wind blew up. Soon, a magnificent mural for the world was painted.
After watching the performance of the two, Zhang Xu took the opportunity to brush his pen. He was as fast as a shooting star and as light as smoke and clouds, and with one stroke, a cursive script of dragons flying and phoenixes dancing was also displayed in front of people. After seeing it, all the people in Luoyang who were present were amazed and exclaimed, ‘In one day, I achieved three wonders,’ which became a well-known story!
It seems that this swordsmanship first is well deserved.
