Introduction to Chen Xuanli
Chen Xuanli, a famous general of the Tang Dynasty, initially served as the Guoyi Captain of the Shenwu Army. Later, he joined forces with Li Longji (Emperor Xuanzong of Tang) to launch an attack and kill Empress Wei and Princess Anle. After Emperor Xuanzong ascended the throne, he stayed in the palace of guards. During the An Shi Rebellion, he led the army to escort Xuanzong to flee to Sichuan, and went to Mawei Posthouse (now Pingxi in western Shaanxi). With the support of the crown prince Li Heng, he launched a mutiny to kill Yang Guozhong and Yang’s sisters, and forced Tang Xuanzong Li Longji to hang Yang Guifei. After the An Lushan Rebellion was quelled, he returned to Chang’an with Emperor Xuanzong, was conferred the title of Duke of Cai, resigned from his position, and died of illness.
Chen Xuanli’s Life
In the fourth year of the Jinglong reign of the Tang Dynasty, Chen Xuanli made contributions to the removal of Empress Wei and Princess Anle, and Emperor Xuanzong of Tang was appointed as the Grand General of the Imperial Guard, Longwu. During the forty five years of Emperor Xuanzong’s reign, he was trusted by his confidants.
In 756 AD, Chen Xuanli conspired with Crown Prince Li Heng and Li Fuguo to assassinate Prime Minister Yang Guozhong, Grand Censor Wei Fangjin, and Grand Minister Yang Xuan. In the second year of Zhide, Xuanli returned to Chang’an from Bashu under Emperor Xuanzong and resided in Xingqing Palace (south inner). He was appointed as Duke of Cai and granted three hundred households.
Around the time Xuanzong moved to the Ganlu Hall of Taiji Palace (West Inner), he passed away due to serious illness.
There is a rumor that Yang Yuhuan was executed at the Mawei Post. The military commander Chen Xuanli was sorry for the beauty of the Noble Consort and could not bear to kill her. Therefore, he conspired with Gao Lishi to replace her with a maid. Gao Lishi transported the Noble Consort’s body by car and Chen Xuanli was the one who examined it. Yang Guifei was escorted south by Chen Xuanli’s confidants and set sail near present-day Shanghai, arriving at Jiujin, Oil Valley Town, Japan.
