How did Li Bai and He Zhizhang meet?
In the 23rd year of the Kaiyuan era (735 AD), Li Bai had just entered a small inn in Chang’an to rest. Because his poetry was so famous, the news of his arrival in Chang’an was quickly known by He Zhizhang. He Zhizhang liked Li Bai’s poetry and appreciated his talent, so he immediately went out to visit him. At that time, Li Baizheng had a belly full of ideals that had nowhere to be realized, so he heard that the Minister of Works, He Zhizhang, came to visit him.
Li Bai had long heard of the famous name He Zhizhang and knew that his “Bole” had arrived. He showed him his new article “Journey to Shu” written during his travels. He Zhizhang immediately exclaimed, “Isn’t it true that Gong is not a human being? He is not a Taibai Star Spirit.” He then called him a “banished immortal. Although He Zhizhang was already in his seventies at that time, the age difference was not important, and the two still had a great conversation. Afterwards, even though these two became close friends, He Zhizhang repeatedly promoted Li Bai and even pushed him to the court.
