Li Wanshun was the granddaughter of Tang Gaozu Li Yuan, the second daughter of Li Jiancheng, and also a noble daughter of the royal family. Everyone knows that Li Jiancheng was killed by Li Shimin during the “Xuanwu Gate Coup”, and all six of his sons, except for his eldest son Li Chengzong who died early, were killed. Li Jiancheng’s five daughters escaped a disaster, but they shouldn’t have gone much better. In fact, only his second daughter Li Wanshun has a record of her smooth life in the latter half of her life.
When Li Jiancheng passed away, Li Wanshun was only four years old, and her mother Zheng Guanyin was only 28 years old at that time. After losing her husband and son, she became a widow in Changlemen and raised her young daughters. When Li Wanshun was seventeen years old, she was appointed as the magistrate of Wenxi County. Normally, the daughter of the crown prince was appointed as a princess. At that time, Li Jiancheng had not yet posthumously conferred the title of hidden crown prince, so Li Wanshun’s title was lowered by one level. The magistrate is usually the title of the daughter of the prince.
Shortly after being appointed as the magistrate of Wenxi County, Li Wanshun married Liu Yingdao as his wife. Liu Yingdao was the son of Liu Linfu, a deputy minister of the Ministry of Personnel, and he himself was a counselor to the Crown Prince. Li Wanshun and Liu Yingdao were very happy after their marriage. The couple had a deep love for each other and shared weal and woe. Liu Yingdao once said that his wife Li Wanshun was not only beautiful in appearance, but also knowledgeable and talented. Li Wanshun lived for 40 years and passed away in the second year of Longshuo (662 AD). Her husband did not marry again and lived alone for more than ten years.

Li Wanshun had a difficult background, but her later marriage can be considered a remedy for her unfortunate fate. Li Wanshun’s marriage was plain and warm, but much happier than many Tang princesses.
