Today, the History Encyclopedia editor brings you some stories about Quan Deyu. Welcome to read the comments.
Time flies, and in the long river of history, one outstanding figure after another has emerged. There are countless outstanding poets in the Tang Dynasty alone, but to this day, only a few are known to us. But we should know that the reason why Tang poetry has such a great reputation is not just due to the contributions of those few poets. On the contrary, there are many poets who, although their reputation is not prominent today, do not necessarily mean that their level is not high, such as Quan Deyu, who was praised as the “platform of poetry” at that time.
When it comes to this name, many friends may not even have heard of it, but he was a well deserved “literary master”. At the age of 15, he had already written hundreds of articles and gained fame in the literary world. As a result, he was favored by the emperor at that time and invited to become the Grand Tutor. Later, he was even ranked as an assistant and became an idol in the hearts of people at that time. At that time, people regarded imitating him as a source of joy in life, and many literati during the mid Tang Dynasty, including Liu Zongyuan and Liu Yuxi, were also his favorite disciples.
And today I want to share with you a poem from one of his representative works, “Twelve Poems in Yutai Style”. The entire poem is centered around “boudoir feelings”, and as a well deserved literary leader at that time, this work also demonstrated high literary value. And even though he may be a man, when he writes about his “girlfriends” from a male perspective, he is actually more detailed than when he writes from a female perspective.
Yutai Ti: Its Eleventh Edition
Last night my skirt was untied, and this morning I’m flying.
Lead cannot be discarded, let not the anvil return.
In this poem, he mainly describes a young woman’s longing for her husband, hoping for his early return, especially the urgent feeling when she thinks of her husband coming back soon. In the first sentence of the poem, he wrote that the woman’s skirt suddenly loosened, which brings up some ancient beliefs. At that time, people believed that certain things carried auspicious or inauspicious signs, and opening the bag of the skirt meant “good marriage between husband and wife”. So when a woman discovers that her skirt is open, she thinks maybe her husband is coming back soon.
In the second sentence of this poem, the poet wrote that the woman saw a scorpion flying when she woke up the next morning. The “spider” mentioned in the poem is actually a kind of spider, which was also a good omen in ancient times. Therefore, this woman firmly believes that her husband is coming back soon, and the joy in her heart is even more difficult to suppress. Since the husband is coming back, the woman must have expressed her feelings, and the poet will write for us in the next two sentences.
In the third and fourth lines of the poem, the poet describes the inner monologue of this woman. With the two good signs mentioned above, she begins to dress up in front of the mirror, hoping to dress up beautifully and await her husband’s return. At this point, a smiling woman’s image popped onto the paper, with the beautiful thought in her heart that her husband was coming back. The poet portrayed it very accurately and delicately, vividly portraying the complex psychology of the little woman before our eyes.
After reading this poem, we cannot help but be infected by the emotions of the woman in the poem, and we can also read from it the profound writing level of the poet. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people nowadays are unaware of him, which is a great pity.
