Empress Su Ming, also known as Empress Liu, was the original consort of Emperor Ruizong of Tang, Li Dan. In ancient times, most women who could become empresses came from noble backgrounds. Empress Liu’s grandfather was Liu Dewei, the Minister of Justice, and her father was Liu Yanjing, the Governor of Shaanxi, who came from noble families.
Liu was initially selected into the Prince’s Mansion as a virtuous daughter and married Li Dan. Later, she gave birth to one son and two daughters: the eldest son Li Chengqi, Princess Shouchang, and Princess Daiguo. In 684 AD, Li Dan ascended the throne as Emperor Ruizong and was conferred the title of Empress by the Liu family. Although the Liu family became a nation, Li Dan reigned for eight years, but he only held power for two years. Six years later, Emperor Ruizong of Tang abdicated in favor of Empress Wu Zetian, and Liu was conferred the title of Crown Princess.
Empress Wu Zetian’s favored maid Wei Tuan’er lured Li Dan but was rejected, harboring resentment, so she ruthlessly retaliated. She falsely accused Liu of using witchcraft and cursed Emperor Wu Zetian. In the second year of Changshou (693 AD), Empress Dowager Liu entered the palace to pay New Year’s greetings and was secretly murdered, with no one knowing her whereabouts. Liu Shi disappeared, but Li Dan dared not mention it at all and remained calm in front of Wu Zetian.
The life of Empress Su Ming Liu was also sad. If she had not married Li Dan, perhaps the ending would not have been so tragic.
