In the first lunar month of the 1368 year of the Gongwu reign, Zhu Yuanzhang ascended to the throne of Emperor in Nanjing and established the Ming Dynasty.
Why did Zhu Yuanzhang choose the name of the country as Da Ming? We have to start with the Ming religion.
Mingjiao was founded by the Persian Mani, so it is also called Manichaeism. Manichaeism believes that there are two opposing forces in the world, called the light and dark sects. Light is light, good is reason; Darkness is darkness, evil, and desire. In 694 AD, Manichaeism was introduced to China and became known as Mingjiao. In the year 845 AD, Emperor Wu of Tang banned Buddhism and the spread of Ming religion was also prohibited, leading to its underground movement.
Due to the Mingjiao Uprising, advocating for a change in the status quo, it was highly welcomed by the vast number of poor farmers who joined the religion one after another. At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, Han Shantong, known as the King of Ming, led three thousand Ming followers to rebel. After being hunted and killed by the Yuan army, Han Linger, his son, continued to be known as the Prince of Xiaoming and governed the rebel armies of various Ming religions. Zhu Yuanzhang was a general of the Prince of Xiaoming.
After Zhu Yuanzhang established the new dynasty, some generals from peasant backgrounds naturally agreed to use “Daming” as the national name, while some literati from landlord class backgrounds, such as Liu Ji, also believed that the sun and moon were the official worship of the court and valued by the royal family throughout history. Moreover, the New Dynasty originated in the south, while the Yuan Dynasty originated in the north. Using the theory of Yin Yang and Five Elements, it can be inferred that the south is fire and belongs to Yang; The north is water and belongs to yin. So, using fire to make water, using yang to dispel yin, and using light to overcome darkness, the Yuan Dynasty will inevitably perish. Moreover, many palace names of various dynasties have been named after the name of the Ming Dynasty. In ancient mythology, the term “Zhu Ming” associated the emperor’s surname with the title of the dynasty, which is coincidental but very auspicious. Therefore, they also agreed to use Daming as the new dynasty name.
