I believe many friends know that Su Shi and Su Che were both very famous poets in ancient times. It is understood that besides being a literary figure, Su Shi was also a very good local official. Su Shi had a younger brother, Su Che, who was also a very famous scholar in history. So what is the relationship between Su Shi and his younger brother Su Che? Let’s take a look with the editor below!
The two brothers were born in Meishan, with their father Su Xun and Su Shi born in 1037, two years older than Su Zhe. When Su Shi was ten years old, their grandfather Su Xu passed away.
Their distant ancestor is the Su flavor of the Tang Dynasty. People from Luancheng, Zhaozhou. Tang Dynasty prime minister and poet. Once demoted to the position of Governor of Meizhou. Su Wei, along with Du Shenyan, Cui Rong, and Li Qiao, is known as one of the Four Friends of Literature, and Su Li is also known as Su Li along with Li Qiao. Su Wei has four sons, and the second one, Su Fen, married and had children in Meishan County. Su Shi’s brothers are descendants of Su Wei.
The two brothers are studying at home, and Dongpo is not only a classmate but also a good teacher to his younger brother. Su Shi once said in a poem, ‘I know little about Ziyou, but his talent is harmonious and clear.’. Not just my younger brother, but a wise friend. And Su Zhe also said in his brother’s epitaph, ‘When I first became a public servant, I relied on knowledge.’. Treat me as a brother, teach me as a teacher.
Later, Su Shi was exiled to Danzhou. There was a Jiang Tangzuo who studied under Su Shi. Su Shi gave him two lines of poetry on a fan, and the sea never cut off the earth’s veins. The end of his white robe was unprecedented. Later, Jiang Tangzuo passed the township examination and went to the examination again, only to find out that his teacher had passed away. So he went to see Su Che again with a fan, and Su Che continued the poem for his deceased brother with his brush.
Su Shi liked humor and would make jokes about Su Che. He wrote a poem called “The Playmate You” which means to joke with Su Che. Su Che is tall and tall. He said, ‘Mr. Wanqiu is as long as a hill, and the Wanqiu Study House is as small as a boat. He often lowers his head and recites scriptures and history, but suddenly extends his head to the roof.’ He is too tall, just like Confucius. And the room is very small, like a small boat. So much so that when he was loudly reciting a book, he unconsciously bumped his head.
But Su Shi had a flaw, which was that he was too talkative and couldn’t handle things in his heart. As he himself said, ‘Like a fly eating, you can’t be happy if you don’t vomit.’ And Su Zhe said to him, ‘You need to understand where you are speaking. Some people can confide in you, while others cannot.’.
The two brothers are both “senior officials of the country”, walking on the temple and singing among the literati. Although they have different personalities, they share almost identical views, which enables them to support each other and walk on the path of life.
In 1069, Wang Anshi began his reform. Both brothers expressed different opinions on this matter. And in the end, they were all released as officials. Su Shi wrote it vividly in a poem.
They are not only brothers, childhood playmates, classmates in school, but also companions on the road of life.
They not only exchanged ideas, reminded each other, and amused each other, but also kept in touch with each other through letters and poetry.
They not only shared hardships, but also Su Zhe was worried about his brother’s character and tried his best to rescue him in the Wutai Poetry Case. The story of Su Zhe’s “removal from official position to atone for his brother’s sins”. Becoming a timeless beauty. On a regular basis, Su Shi would also visit his younger brother when he had free time, and as an official, he would be closer to his brother. In 1074, Su Zhe was transferred to serve in Qizhou. The following year, Su Shi gave up the opportunity to return to Beijing and voluntarily requested to be transferred to Mizhou. This way, I can reunite with my younger brother in Shandong. This is the two dependence in life, difficult to part ways.
