According to legend, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang saw that Shen Zhenzhu was born with a “beautiful jade like appearance and a quality comparable to refined gold”, and learned that she had “read ten years and read ten thousand volumes”. He selected her as a member of the good family and sent her to the Eastern Palace as a concubine to the grandson of the emperor, Li Yu.
