How absurd is Li Heng, the uneducated emperor of Tang Muzong

Emperor Muzong of Tang, Li Heng, was the third son of Emperor Xianzong of Tang. He reigned for a short period of time and died at the age of only thirty. His achievements throughout his life were lacking in merit and hardly worth writing about. Moreover, he spent his days fantasizing about immortality, indulging in pleasure, and ignoring political affairs. Among the emperors of the Tang Dynasty, he was considered an uneducated and incompetent emperor.
However, it was this emperor who set a record that three out of his five sons became emperors, and all three sons were very filial. After each of them ascended the throne, they posthumously honored their mothers as empress dowagers and enjoyed the imperial temple. This is also rare in Chinese history, but it has nothing to do with him personally.
Tang Muzong Li Heng was actually not qualified to become emperor. He was neither the eldest son nor initially appointed as the crown prince, and he did not have any admirable moral talents. However, he had a good mother, which played a crucial role in his ability to become emperor. Tang Muzong’s mother was the granddaughter of Guo Ziyi, a major contributor to the suppression of the An Lushan Rebellion. At that time, the Guo family had a strong influence in the court and could even directly intervene in its politics. Moreover, both the mothers of Tang Xianzong’s eldest and second sons came from humble backgrounds and were unable to compete with the Guo family. Although the eldest son was knowledgeable, capable, and well liked by Tang Xianzong, he unfortunately died tragically at the age of nineteen. As a result, Tang Muzong had a great chance of winning and indeed became emperor smoothly.
When Tang Muzong ascended the throne, he was only 26 years old, which was the age to make achievements. However, he indulged in pleasure and disregarded his health. As a result, he suffered a stroke at a young age. When he was seriously ill, he even avoided seeking medical attention and took pills, which delayed his condition. At the age of thirty, he passed away and became a short-lived emperor in the history of the Tang Dynasty.
As the emperor, Li Heng is not the main character, but the actors are still very handsome, and the costume design is also quite sophisticated. However, this emperor is also too weak, and it seems that his physical condition is not very good, which coincides with the real situation of Tang Muzong Li Heng in history.
Although Li Heng is played by an unknown second tier actor in the drama, compared to the real Tang Muzong in history, he is still remarkable. The real Tang Muzong may not necessarily be so handsome. According to historical records, Li Heng, the Emperor of Tang Dynasty, became emperor solely because his mother was the granddaughter of Guo Ziyi, a great hero who quelled the An Lushan Rebellion. The Guo family was very powerful in the court at that time, and Li Heng was very lucky. The Crown Prince died early at that time, so he was able to ascend the throne smoothly.
When Li Heng became the emperor, he was in his twenties and had a big fight. However, this emperor either fantasized about immortality all day long, took excessive elixirs, or took his concubines and palace maids to enjoy the mountains and waters, hosted grand palace banquets, and never actively cared about the government. Due to Li Heng’s excessive indulgence and physical exhaustion, he suffered a stroke at the age of less than thirty and was unable to move half of his body. In the end, he died at the age of thirty and became the short-lived emperor of the Tang Dynasty.
